Aberchirder
History & Information
Has a most picturesque situation, founded in 1764 it is laid out in the form of three long parallel
streets sloping gradually down from a hill top with a square a third of the way down Main Street. Its founder was Alexander Gordon of Auehintoul, whose grand-uncle a previous laird was one of Peter
the Great's generals.
Some 2 meters South over looking one of the most magnificent reaches of the Deveron is the Bridge of Marnoch and Kinnairdy Castle an
L-shape tower-house finely restored by its late owner Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, the former lord Lyon King of Arms: the titles and estates passed to the eldest son in
1971. On the left bank of the Deveron in an ancient graveyard where the ruins of a pre-Reformation Kirk is dedicated to
St Marnan.
Aberchirder has a nickname FOGGIE
LOAN meaning 'mossy field', an apt description for this site.
