The first recorded castle at Aboyne is 13th
century documented as ‘castrum de Obeyn; made of motte
and bailey stronghold, this was followed by a stone
keep, and then replaced in the 17th century
by a tower house part of which can be found in the west
end of the mansion built in 1880s by Sir Cunliffe
Brooks, preserved at the castle is the Formaston stone
dating from A.D. 800 which shows the mirror symbol, part
of a elaborately designed Celtic cross.
