Amisfield Dumfriesshire
all though started as a burgh of barony in 1613, this is but a
quiet village on the Edinburgh road north east of Dumfries,
with no present burghal pretensions. In 1685, some seventy years after Sir John
Charteris obtained its charter, it had fewer
than 100 inhabitants.
Amisfield Tower, nearly one mile away, is one of the finest 17th-cent.
tower-castles in Scotland; it was built just after 1600. Elschieshiels Tower,
near Lochmaben a few miles away,
was built by the same talented architect.
The tower incorporates traces of an older
tower, and was occupied until quite recently. The interior
is in good condition. It is a tall narrow building, 30 ft square and 77 ft
high, consisting of four rooms, one above the
other, with the stair in a circular
turret; the high expanse of plain wall contrasts sharply with the complicated corbel table and cap-house at the
roof.
