The town and harbour were laid out by the 12th Earl of Eglin ton in 1805, but it was not until the use of sea-going steamboats that the project began to be successful.

The deep-water and well-equipped port handles an increasing volume of imports and exports for the Scottish iron and steel industries.

The great chemical works at Ardeer and car-ferry and other vessels to Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Arran.

The Shell oil refinery handles 1,000.000 tons of petroleum products annually, including fuel for Prestwick and Glasgow airports. But Ardrossan has extensive, clean beaches, and (there are ample holiday-makers' pursuits, especially sea fishing and boating.

Ardrossan in 1975 was given a new interest, for in September of that year the first ship built there for forty-five years was launched from an old yard resuscitated by an Ardrossan man, who had worked there in his youth, and brought it back to life nine years earlier with small capital.

The ship was the Kylesku ferry Maid of Glencoul.
