A
pleasant village situated on the shore at the mouth of the river
Stinchar. 13 miles south of Girvan, formerly a notorious haunt of
smugglers, then a prosperous fishing port but now a centre for
agriculture and forestry, it is best known for early crops of
potatoes from the seaside fields. Ruins of

Castle dominate the village and the fords at the mouth of the river.
The old narrow bridge. which had carried the main road to Stranraer
for 200 years, has been replaced. About 2 m. to the
south is
Glenapp
Castle.
the home of the earls of Inchcape. and beyond that again the road
runs through Glenapp with its woods and little church.
