Balmaclellan Information
Balmaclellan This picturesque
village lies along a steep street below the road from
Dumfries to
new Galloway, and is dominated
by a small motte-and-bailey, probably the actual McLellan's Place which gives
the village and parish its name.
The village is near the north east end of Loch Ken. Robert Paterson,
the stonemason from whom Scott drew his character of 'Old Mortality', lived here for many
years, and his wife kept the school until her death in 1785.
A tablet in the churchyard includes his
name, though he was buried at Caerlaverock. In the grounds of Holm House, just
to the north is
a life-size sculpture of himself and his horse, turrie (or Corrie), the sculptor,
had Balmaclellan connections. A
copy by Currie of the same group stands in the
grounds of Dumfries Museum.
