Banchory splendidly situated on the river Dee sheltered by the massive hill with smaller hills to the south is a pleasant sun-trap with a riverside golf
course and famous salmon fishing. Banhory was first mentioned in 1324, originally called the Kirk ton and later Town head, with a grammar school, and a
hospital for the aged and infirm It had a market cross, a fragment of which is preserved in the Burnett Park. In 1805 a new village was formed on higher
ground, called Arbeadie but the arrival of 'the railway in 1853 and new prosperity led to the merging of the villages into Banchory.
