The recorded history starts in the 5th century when St Ternan founded a monastery on the banks of' the Dee near Banchory Lodge, a native of the district he was a pupil of St Ninian

present manse wall dates from this early
Christian period. The discovery of pygmy flints from the Palaeolithic period suggests a much earlier settlement.
