This is a secluded village 7 miles south of
Girvan, formerly made
remote by the difficulties of the roads leading to it.
Barr lies in
a sheltered corner where the river Stinchar emerges from the hills.
It is the centre of important forestry and sheep-farming country,
and is a popular and quiet holiday resort. In days gone by Barr was
the scene of the famous Kirkdandie Fair. where smugglers from
Ballantrae mingled with
hill-men and shepherds to indulge in a conviviality notorious even
then.
The smugglers knew the village well. lying on the direct route
from the coast via thee Stinchar Glens to the security of the
hill country, from which their merchandise was distributed over safe
paths to towns of Ayrshire and Lanarkshire
