Buckinghamshire
History And Information
The town is served by Aylesbury railway station, which is the present terminus of passenger services from London Marylebone.
Buckinghamshire is divided into four districts - Aylesbury Vale,
Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe.
For the traditional county boundaries, Buckinghamshire ceremonial county includes the modern administrative county plus the Borough of Milton Keynes.
Milton Keynes and district "North Bucks" became a unitary authority in 1997.
The county includes the Chiltern Hills to the South and the Vale of Aylesbury to the north. Buckinghamshire
has a modern service based economy and is part of the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire region, which was the seventh richest sub region in the European Union, the southern
part of the county is a prosperous section of the London commuter belt.
The county has fertile agricultural lands, with many landed estates, especially those of the Rothschild banking
family of England in the 19th century, manufacturing industries include furniture-making, traditionally centered at High Wycombe, pharmaceuticals and agricultural processing. Some
of the settlements in Buckinghamshire date back further than the Anglo-Saxon period.
Aylesbury, for example, is known to date back at least as far as 1500 BC. For the visitor, Berkshire has as much
to offer as any of the counties. Donnington Castle is a must-see; constructed during the late 14th century, the striking, twin-towered gatehouse of this castle survives amid impressive earthworks.
Then there are the delights of The Corn Exchange. This entertainment venue, situated in Newbury's town centre presents drama, comedy, music, dance, exhibitions, films, resident orchestra Southern Sinfonia and The Gallery bar and cafe by award winning Newbury Manor. In summer there are family shows and music in the streets and parks, and a pantomime December to January. It also manages New
Greenham Arts, a gallery with workshops and performances; here you can find Canals, fishing, golf and an abundance of historic sites too in this wonderful area of the United Kingdom.
