History & Information
Little Cumbrae to the south-west is privately owned. Both islands have had people and property here since the end of the last ice age The Glaidstane at the top of the island gives a panoramic view of
the upper Clyde estuary, the much larger islands of Arran and Bute, were you can find the county town was Rothesay, it features a late medieval castle surrounded by a moat and can be reached by ferry
from Wemyss Bay which offers an onward rail link to Glasgow. and onwards to Ben Lomond in the north and the Paps of Jura.
Flights across the Atlantic from Glasgow International Airport can provide a
good view of the island. Holy Isle is 2 miles long and around half a mile wide. Its highest point is the hill Mullach Mor. The island has a long history as sacred site, with a spring said to have
healing properties, the hermit cave of 6th Century monk Saint Molaise.
The Viking fleet sheltered between Arran and Holy Isle before the battle of Largs. Today the Island is owned by a school of Tibetan
Buddhism.
Other Islands here are Inch-Marnoch, and a portion of the Hebrides.
