CHIPPING, This
charming village has beautiful
scenery around, with moor-land on the N. It
lies in an agricultural area with some old industry. The Church of St Bartholomew is mainly early 16th-cent. with
19th-cent. restoration, but traces
survive of all periods from the 12th cent, onward. There is a 12th-cent. piscina. At Bleasdale. NW. of the village, an
important discovery was
made of wooden posts in a circular area similar to Woodhenge, and relics of
human
occupation were also found. The posts were intact at a certain distance below ground level but threatened to
decay after exposure to the air. They were removed to
Preston Museum and concrete posts substituted to mark the site. |
