Drumochter Invernesshire
DRUMOCHTER, Inverness-shire the summit of the Pass, at the top of Glen Garry
from the south and the beginnings of Glen Trium to the north is familiar
and significant for several reasons.
It was the boundary of the two counties stated above and is
now the meeting place of Highland and Tayside Regions; the road,
first built by the indomitable General Wade in 1729, reaches an
altitude of 1,506 ft, and the railway, built somewhat later but
with equal determination, reaches 1.484 ft - and at this point
the railway may claim to be the highest in Britain in the
mainline category: anyone who hears broadcast news bulletins
when there is snow in the Highlands is familiar with the
announcement: "The Drumochter Pass is blocked" many cars and lorries have been
abandoned'. (It is true that the
devil's elbow usually takes
precedence in this sort of
announcement, but Dromochter comes a close second.) At the Drumochter Pass the visitor
will encounter the Boar of Badenoch
and the Sow of Atholl, which are small peaks to the west of road and rail.
