DUNDEE,
Angus headquarters of the Tayside
Region, has come a long way
since
its main products were
said to be 'jam.
jute
and journalists',
although the factories
for these essential
commodities still
flourish, the seaport
town was quick to
seize the opportunities presented by North Sea oil developments,
and it now ranks high as a base
for the multifarious
services demanded
by the oilmen,
with vastly
increased facilities in its
harbour area. A wide variety of new industries has been attracted by the reliable and efficient supply of labour.
But Dundee is by no
means just a bustling industrial city: it has a remarkable history
and is proud of its recreational, leisure and educational
facilities, which range from twenty-eight public parks, four golf
courses, several well-known schools and a flourishing university,
which grew out of the college of St
Andrews to full status in 1967.
