The
harbour is in good shape, but is used only by lobster-boats and pleasure-craft. The spirit of the little port is symbolized by a splendid statue of a
seated fisherman on the waterfront, gazing out over the waters. Inscribed on the pedestal of this modern work by Coreena Cowie are the words
'They see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep'. On the high land behind the town is the ruin of Findochty Castle, a rectangular tower-house with a small oblong tower attached to the N. front. It was built by Thomas Ord in the 16th cent.
The Muir of Findochty, now largely reclaimed and converted into
farmland, was the scene of the Battle of the Bauds in a.d. 961 when the Norse, under Eric of the Bloody Axe, were routed by the Scots under King Indolphus. who was himself slain and is
commemorated by the King's Cairn.Immediately W. of Findochty is the golf course of Strathlene. |
