Iona Information
|
|
Iona was founded in 563A.D by St Columber who landed here from Ireland and started to Christianize Scotland making the island of Iona his base and founded a community here. After
the death of St Columber in 597 A.D the Island was raided by Norse and pagan invaders, with the monks living on the Island suffering greatly, but they survived and went on to make the Island a place
that was the recognized as the seat of holiness in the western Christian world and became the place for royal kings and chiefs to be buried from all over not just Scotland and Island but from as far
away as Norway. The last Abbot of the Island turned the Island into a cathedral centre for the bishopric of the Island. Then the monastery was suppressed during the Reformation, in 1693 the Island
came under the rule of the Campbells of Argyll, then in 1899 the 8th Duke presented the church of Scotland the ruins of the Abbey, he expressed his wishes that it might be re roofed the
first service took place in1910 the Abbey now is a regular place of worship.
