Johnshaven,
off the A92 coast road 4m. S. of inverbervie, is an interesting fishing village with an attractive little harbour. It is in the historic parish of Benholm from which the original owners took their name, Master Thomas de Benholm being Rector of aberdeen Grammar School in 1262. Benholm passed to the Keiths, who held part of it, the Templelands of Benholm, from the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and it is likely that the village name derives from an older St John's Haven.
