Kilbarchan Property For Sale & Rent
Kilbarchan a small town 5.5 miles west from paisley, was once a
place of early religious significance; the
original church of St Barchan was
bestowed in Paisley by Walter
Fitz-Allan, High Steward of Scotland.
Ranfurly
Castle nearby was once the home of the Knox family, from whom John Knox, the Cal-vinist reformer, was descended. In the mid-18th cent, the town became a prominent centre of
the weaving industry, with about
1,000 hand-looms in production.
A
typical weaver's cottage at the Cross
has been restored by the National Trust for Scotland, On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout
the year and on summer Sundays, visitors may see the old craft in
operation, and the cottage also contains items of local interest illustrating the
domestic life of those earlier days.
The address of the custodian is,
appropriately, 8 Shuttle Street. The distinctive steeple (1755),which is an
outstanding architectural feature of the centre of the town, has been given a new
lease of life as public meeting rooms. Habbie Simpson, a renowned piper and
local character of the late 16thcent., is commemorated by a
statue mounted on the steeple
