The village of Kildonan is on the Helmsdale river. Gold found in the Kildonan Burn led to a minor gold rush in 1868-9, but it was
later found to be
nearly all in dust; £6,000-worth was extracted, but the search for gold here was pronounced uneconomic.
On Learable Hill, about 1 m. up-river from Kildonan, are several rows of stones and cairns with no evident connection, also a
standing-stone on the summit of the hill with a cross carved on the W.
face. In the 1960s interest in panning for gold in the Kildonan burns was revived, and a number of amateurs spent their holidays seeking El Dorado. A Government scheme announced in mid-1971 to
encourage the
search for minerals of all kinds in Britain turned some professional eyes towards these hills and waters, without much success.
