Kinbrace a crofting township, stands near the junction of two
burns that come together to form the R. Helms-dale, noted for its angling.
The district was turned over to sheep-farming in the early 19th cent. In 1877, however, the 3rd Duke of Sutherland tried to reclaim land for agriculture, and
used a steam plough as he did at Lairg, but with no lasting success. Just over 2 miles south east of Kinbrace is the largest of a variety of chambered cairns recorded in the district; it has a tripartite chamber reached by a passage 25 ft long.
