Kirk o' Shotts Property For Sale & Rent
The
township of Kirk o' Shotts is situated in the county of Lanarkshire and stands just off the main
Edinburgh
to Glasgow road some five miles east south east of
Airdrie.
There is evidence of a church here dedicated to St Catherine of Siena, dating
from before 1450; the present building
was put up in 1821, a little to the west
of the old one.
The name of this old village is now familiar over a wide
area, for on the high ground above the church stands the B.B.C.
television mast, 750 ft high.
The Independent
Television Authority also has a mast in this district. The choice of Kirk o' Shotts
for T.V. transmitting station lay in its position
to the most densely populated areas in Scotland. But when the B.B.C.
mast went up 1952 the cottages around it were still lit by paraffin lamps and had an outside village tap.
