LOCHGILPHEAD in Argyllshire a former headquarters of Argyll County Council, is an important market town and centre for a large area at the head of Loch Gilp, an inlet of Loch Fyne, and on the Crinan canal 2 m. from its start south east at Ardrishaig: it is on the junction of the A83 where it comes down from Inveraray and the A816, which goes winding off up to Oban. It is thus an excellent centre for touring by road or by sail, and although it was once a burgh of neat villas it has hotels and guest-houses and other holiday amenities.
