LOCHGOILHEAD in Argyll, This village at the head of Loch Goil is surrounded by woods and mountains, and is in the argyll forest park. The church, which was well restored in 1955, has the remains of a chantry-altar founded by Campbell of Ardkinglass in 1512. A 17th-cent. memorial to that family frames the east door. On the west shore of the loch are the ruins of Carrick Castle, dating at least from the 15th cent., and once a stronghold of the earls of Argyll and burned in 1685.The road leading NW. from Lochgoilhead to Loch Fyne goes through spectacular, rocky Hell's Glen to a summit of 719 ft.
