Loch Lomond Property For Sale and Rent
Loch Lomond in Stirlingshire! Dunbartonshire. The largest inland water in Great Britain, Loch Lomond also has claims to be the most beautiful. It is 24 m. long, and varies in width
from 0.75 miles to 5 miles Its thirty wooded islands are towards the wider south end, with the exception of six smaller ones. The largest island is Inchtnurrm, which contains ruins of an old castle of the earls of Lennox. Inchcaillach, or the 'women's island', has the ruins of a nunnery and is the burial place of the
Mac Gregors. Five islands, including Inchcaillach and Clairinch, with part of the mainland shore and marshy hinterland, comprise a Nature Reserve; the islands have semi-natural deciduous woodland and
are good for wildfowl and rich in aquatic life.
The larger islands lie along the Highland Boundary Fault, one of the two major structural features in Scotland, which stretches
right across the country from southwest to northeast Steamer trips from balloch are a feature of the loch. Boating is enjoyed everywhere, but is more concentrated at balmaha. Row ardenn an has a large youth hostel, and is a centre for canoeing, fishing,
water-skiing, and swimming While the west side of the loch has heavy traffic during the summer, the east side has remained remarkably quiet, as the road ends at Rowarden-nan.
Perhaps the most-climbed mainland mountain, Ben Lomond
(3,192 ft) is usually climbed from here, a long but not difficult walk, and offers magnificent views. In June 1971 the Queen inaugurated the first £12,000,000 stage of the Central Scotland Water
Development Board's scheme to take 70,000,000 gallons a day from Loch Lomond for the industrial belt; this was later raised to 100,000,000 gallons, but because of the great depth of the loch its level will be virtually unaffected.
By
one of the divisions under the 1975 Local Government reorganization, the east side of the loch is in Central Region but the west side and south end (the more populous and richer part) are in Strathclyde.
