Newton Stewart was founded on the west bank of the River Cree in the mid-17th Century by William Stewart to manufacture wool
and goods using the river to power the mills. Today it is chiefly a market town and touring centre for the heart of the Galloway
Newton Stewart is only 25 miles from the ferry ports of Stranraer and Cairnryan. Regular crossings are available from Belfast or Larne in Northern Ireland. Glasgow Airport is approximately two
hours drive to Newton Stewart. The closest airport to us is Prestwick International Airport. It takes approximately one and a half hours drive to reach us in Newton Stewart from Prestwick, there is no
train service that runs to Newton Stewart; however trains run from Glasgow to Barrhill and Stranraer, Newton Stewart is approx. 25 miles from Barrhill (to the north) and Stranraer (to the west). You
can follow the A714 from Barrhill south to Newton Stewart. From Stranraer follow the A75 east this will take you across some of the most scenic country side in Scotland.
