History
Oldmeldrum situated in
Aberdeenshire was created in 1672. It has an old square which is dominated
by the Town Hall, with tower and clock. A
number of old houses still stand. Oldmeldrum is the centre of agricultural
country devoted mainly
to fat-stock rearing there is also a distillery.
The nearby Barra Castle stands to the west of Barra
Hill, close to the site of Bruce's decisive victory over the Comyns in
1307. Turrets carried up from the
foundations, sparse use. of corbelling, and simplicity of contour make it a very impressive building.
It was the Ramsays who in 1755 added the "New Wing'
which was restored in
1956. The buildings now form three sides of a
courtyard; the fourth side is a wall surmounted by
three decorative stone vases. This wall existed before
1755. Just north is Meldrum House, now
a hotel. The oldest part has massive stone
vaulting of the 13thcent. The central portion, with its elegant external stone
stairway, dates from the 1 7th cent., while the rest of the building dates from the early 19th cent.
Oldmeldrum stands on a westward-facing slope giving nice views across the
farmlands.
