Oyne is a village and a parish. The village provides the usual starting point for the ascent of
Bennachie. On cither side of the village are two very striking castles Harthill
one mile to the south east dating from1601 - a ruined Z-plan tower-house with a barmkin
or
courtyard, the gateway to which still stands, was the home of the Leiths, a
turbulent race.
John, Unown as the Violent Laird, was at constant war with
authority and was more than once warded in the Tolbooth of Edinburgh. When
imprisoned in the Aberdeen Tolbooth, he set it on fire and released all the
prisoners.
Westhall, to the north with its courtyard, is a 16th-eent. L-plan
tower-house notable for its tine label corbelling and built by the Abercrombies,
frequently at feud with the Leiths.
Ultimately it passed to another branch of
the Leiths. The village of Old Rayne two miles north of Oyne, ancient
ecclesiastical burgh of barony with a striking market cross, was a summer palace of the Bisnops
of Aberdeen and was the site of Lowrin (St Lawrence's) Fair, one of the greatest
of the northern markets that survived until the 1930s.
