Perth
Perth set on the banks
of the river Tay where it ceases to be tidal, between the two Inches on
which as much as 500 years ago golfers, archers and
linen-bleachers jostled with roaming cattle for priority, the
older part of the town has been protected by those splendid open
Inches and development has been behind and beyond them. Antiquity
is centered on the handsome St John's Kirk. one of the noblest of
the great Scottish burghal churches of the 15th
centaury but round about the discerning eve may find relics of a
bygone age not entirely smothered in modernity.
Many of the terraces and crescents, to the
north and south are reminiscent of Edinburgh’s
New Town, and Perth, now thankfully relieved of a vast
stream of heavy traffic by major by-passes, is a pleasant place to
explore on foot
