Johnstone Property For Sale & Rent
Johnstone an
industrial
town, is sometimes known as the 'engineering burgh'. Founded in 1781 on a plan drawn up by
George Houston, laird of Johnstone, on the site of a hamlet called Brig o'
Johnstone, it was well planned, but it grew too fast and became a typical product
of the industrial revolution. Engineering is the staple industry, and Johnstone
claims to
have started the first firm of its kind in Britain (founded 1815) for making
machine tools. Cochran Tower,
built in 1896, marks the site of Cochran Castle, the former residence of the
earls of
Dundonald.
Johnstone Castle was demolished in 1956 when purchased by the Council for a housing estate,
but the central tower survives. Chopin stayed at the Castle in 1848 when he gave his recital in
Glasgow, during that strange visit
to
Scotland shortly before his death.
